As with the full swing, alignment is something that appears so obvious and so simple that we forget to check it on a regular basis.
Use this video lesson as a reminder that each time you’re on the practice putting green you need to pay close attention to the alignment of your feet, your hips and your shoulders.
I’d also encourage you to build an ‘alignment check’ into your pre-shot routine on the golf course.
Watch the video below for a recap of what good putting alignment is. In the video below, I placed a series of white tees around the back of the hole to make it more visible on camera – just in case you’re wondering what they are:
- Start by aiming the putter face at your initial target (not necessarily the hole because there could be some break to allow for). Then build your stance around the putter’s position – rather than trying to line your stance up first and then aiming the putter face.
- The line of feet should aim parallel left of the hole (for the right-handed golfer). See the image to the right where a club along the ball-to-target line and a club along the feet are perfectly parallel.
- Alignment is NOT just about your feet. Your feet act as a line for your knees, hips and shoulders to follow. Pay particular attention to the line of your shoulders.
