Would you expect Toulon Golf to close out their 2024 Small Batch releases with anything other than a showstopper with perhaps their coolest background story yet? No? Well, us either.
Today, after much teasing from the Toulon Golf social media channels for some time now, the company is officially announcing the “Dallas”, an homage to the “Merry Mex” or “Supermex” himself, Lee Trevino.
The Story – Toulon Dallas
There may not be a more apropos meeting of the minds than the one which happened a year ago as a legendary manufacturing family met a legendary golf family. It should be of no surprise that as the Toulon and Trevino worlds collided, something special was sure to happen. Both are names, brands, and more importantly families whom at the head of their respected tables sit two of the greatest to ever do it in their respected fields.
With the Toulon family re-establishing their brand over the past year and the Trevino family working to build their apparel company “Super Mex Golf” around the legend of Lee, this was a collaboration that just had to happen. So, the conversations began and immediately both sides knew where things needed to go, and it started with the year 1984.
In case you don’t know the story, back in ’84 Lee was hitting it tee to the green as well as ever, but the putting eluded him even getting to the point where he hit 18 greens and had 36 putts. Eventually, his then wife Claudia pointed out that the winner and also the runner-up of the Open Championship used the same style putter, and he should try it too. So, they found and off the rack version at the pro-shop of the Dutch Open and paid $55.00 for it. After quite literally stomping on it in the parking lot to get it to the correct loft and lie, Lee shot 64 the next day and eventually won the 1984 PGA Championship with it culminating in the iconic image of him kissing the putter after making the tournament winning putt.
So you see, this had to be the putter. However, don’t worry, there is a lot more precision in play here, and no stomping necessary for adjustment. The head shape is known in putter circles and the “A-Blade” and is known for its iconic bumpers and angular overall visuals. In Toulon Golf fashion, every inch of the design has been meticulously gone over including moving to an H1 (crank neck) hosel as well as elongating the blade length to 4.5”.
The Details
The 904L material is met with some of the finest radius and flow work you will ever see in a putter of this style. With a larger cavity than the original, more weight was moved elsewhere and allowed for a slightly wider front to back sizing as well. Overall, the MOI of the Dallas actually comes in at 5,000 and quite literally makes it the most forgiving version of the A-Blade ever.
Aesthetically, the decision was easy to keep the branding subtle and clean, from the top side with both the Toulon name on the H1 neck and Lee’s iconic signature in the cavity. The sole is a tip of the cap to the spirit of Lee himself with the Super Mex sombrero and iconic “D” of Dallas. There is no alignment, and the face was also left clean to showcase the double fly cut with small tuna pattern. It is all tied together in a bow with the iconic Milk Chocolate PVD that Toulon Golf is known for.
The “Dallas” officially releases tomorrow, 12/1/24, on Lee Trevino’s 85th birthday. It is dropping in extremely limited numbers and will be available on the Toulon website in a first-come-first-serve basis. As has been the case with the other Small Batch releases, this work of putting art will be priced at a premium $1,800.
