To put it simply, 2024 is the year that Cobra embraced the dark side. Overall, the Darkspeed line has impressed from top to bottom, with the drivers leading the discussion for what many consider to be the driver release of the year. But it didn’t stop at Darkspeed; when Cobra announced their putter lineup for 2024, those models, too, seemed to go a little darker compared to the previous 3D and Vintage models. Knowing all of that, it seems fitting that Cobra is announcing KING Black Edition Tour and Black Edition CB and MB irons today.
In recent years, we have seen many companies introduce black irons or wedges, and one of the most discussed aspects of these releases is how well the finish holds up. For some companies and certain products, this has been a struggle. However, for Cobra, it’s a challenge they take head-on. With multiple examples over the last 5-6 years, Cobra has shown that they not only embrace darker finishes when it comes to their clubs, but they also excel at it.
“Cobra was on a mission to create the most durable black finish on the market. These are not just irons; they are a statement. Proof of our intent to not only create the highest performing technologies in the game, but the most visually and aesthetically pleasing.” -Jose Miraflor, Vice President of Product Architecture & Consumer Connections at Cobra
Cobra’s finish is more durable than others because they use a DBM finish, which stands for Diamondized Black Metal, and is chemically implanted into the metal to enhance surface hardness for durability. This finish offers several benefits, such as reducing glare and giving the iron a sleek look. However, the main advantage of a DBM finish is that it lasts longer as a black finish compared to alternatives like PVD.
It has been some time since the initial launch of the King Tour, CB, and MB irons, but they continue to be some of the best player’s irons available. In fact, Rickie Fowler still uses the King Tour irons on the PGA Tour. These irons are constructed from 1025 carbon steel and undergo Cobra’s 5-step forging process, resulting in perfectly shaped and incredibly soft-feeling irons. For a comprehensive technical breakdown of the King Tour, CB, and MB irons, as well as the 5-step forging process, you can check out the full release article here.
The Cobra KING Black Edition Tour irons offer a perfect blend of soft feel, distance, and forgiveness without sacrificing the consistency and workability that better players crave. The irons feature CNC undercuts in the cavity, allowing for weight manipulation to achieve dialed-in launch conditions. As the clubs get longer, the undercut cavities get deeper and are filled with a soft-feeling TPU to generate a soft feel at impact. The KING Black Edition Tour irons have 2° stronger lofts than the CB/MB, which helps increase distance. These irons are available from 3-GW in both right and left-handed models. However, the stock 4-PW set is only available in RH, while lefties will need to custom order their set of KING Black Edition Tour irons.
For the better ball strikers, the Black Edition CB/MB offers an even more compact profile than the KING Tour. Thanks to Cobra’s forgiving process, tungsten is unnecessary in these sets because the center of gravity has been precisely centered. As a stock set, the KING Black Edition CB/MB irons come as a combo set, with the 4-6 irons coming in the CB and 7-PW being the MB. However, those looking for a full set of Black Edition CB or MB can custom order a set of 3-GW in either head design. Left-handed golfers are limited to either the combo set or a complete set of MB.
The King Black Edition Tour and Black Edition CB/MB come with limited edition KBS $-Taper shafts with a black PVD finish. Both irons also feature all-black Lamkin Crossline grips. Additionally, the Black Edition irons are eligible for complimentary Arccos Smart Sensors, which can help capture accurate data for your golf game.
Cobra KING Black Edition irons will be available in retail stores and online starting October 18th. More information on the Cobra KING Black Edition ions can be found at www.cobragolf.com.
