Callaway Chrome Tour X Golf Ball Review: First Impressions
I am sad to see the Callaway Chrome Soft X ball go. I wrote last year that I’d never used a Callaway ball before, and I write this review this year having played a Callaway Chrome Soft X in every competitive game of golf I have played in 2023, so the pressure is on the Chrome Tour X to fill that void in my life. The first thing to note visually is that the dimple pattern has changed from all hexagonal dimples to some hexagonal and some round.
NCG Verdict
Changing your #1 performing tour golf ball is a big move, especially after all of its tour success last year, but that is what Callaway has done, bringing out the new Chrome Tour X ball, so you can be confident that Callaway is certain that this is a better ball than its predecessor.
We start our ball test with a mid-length pitch shot of around 50 yards and this ball provides everything you would expect: low launch, bags of spin for a shot that is going to one hop and stop on even the firmest greens. The more these shots spin, the better, and I really liked how the ball felt gripping the grooves.
Callaway’s new ball features a new Hyper Fast Soft Core, which is an entirely new rubber system that more accurately achieves the target compression for more consistent performance. I was pleased that despite hitting my shots consistently to the right, how consistent the shots were carry and spin wise, which is going to help me massively on my approach shots.
I was really pleased with the spin on the 7-iron. 6600 rpm of backspin on a 7 iron is pretty much perfect and is going to help me keep the ball on the greens. I naturally launch the ball quite low, so making sure that I use a ball that spins enough is vital for my game.
Although the ball speed numbers aren’t quite what I was hoping for from the driver (this could be down to me experiencing an unusually high spin rate in the past few weeks), The total distance is not too bad. The ball feels hot from the face, and with some fine-tuning, I am sure I could use this ball to optimise my long game.
A final comment to add is how spinny and soft this ball feels around the green. Callaway’s new Chrome Tour X has a new urethane cover, which is spinnier than the previous model’s, which is only going to give you more control and more up and downs.
This is a great ball and is going to go straight into the bag of many Callaway tour players, so you should absolutely get out and try it. Callaway offers 360 Triple Track, regular Triple Track, and new TruTrack visual technology on this ball to help you hole more putts.
