Back in December of last year (2022), TaylorMade Golf launched their latest version of the P770 irons and if you missed our big preview on them, you can find that here. Following their recent trend, a limited edition is being announced today, and the P770 gets the Phantom Black treatment.
Over the last few releases, the company has taken several of their P Series irons and released the darker finish about a year after the original release and with the P770 that continues. The forged hollow body construction features the same 8620 carbon steel body with a 4140 steel face. The P770 Phantom Black are also filled with what TaylorMade calls SpeedFoam Air, designed to dampen vibration and help with the sound profile.
As mentioned, the irons are unchanged in performance and technology, what has changed is the finish. The new P770 Phantom Black adds a dark PVD to the exterior bringing a sleek look that will definitely turn some heads.
The biggest question we will get will be about wear patterns and durability. With these launching today, it is impossible to say, but going off the previous release of the P790 when they went dark, the answer is yes. The PVD will wear at impact from both ball and club and leave behind a more steel looking finish. Some will love it, others will loathe it, and there doesn’t really appear to be any in between. Where do you stand on club wear?
For the loft peepers out there, TaylorMade keeps the P770 set fairly traditional, but here is a look at the 4-PW.
The TaylorMade P770 Phantom Black will drop today on www.taylormadegolf.com and at retail partners at a price of $1,399 for steel and $1,499 for graphite and will be a 7 piece set (4-PW). Standard shaft will be a KBS Tour Black in both X or S. Custom options are available.
