As colder temperatures approach, staying warm on the golf course becomes a priority. But warmth shouldn’t come at the cost of performance, which is why choosing the right thermal trousers is crucial.
Our Best winter thermal trousers guide features options from top brands, such as the Abacus Druids Windvent trousers, designed to keep both wind and moisture at bay, and the Callaway Winter Thermal Trouser, known for its superior thermal insulation. Whether you’re seeking the comfort of the Glenmuir Technical Water Repellent Performance Winter Golf Trousers or the warmth of the Ping SensorWarm Winter Trouser, you’ll find something that suits your needs.
Best Thermal Golf Trousers
Abacus Druids Windvent trousers
RRP £99
Abacus is a Swedish brand that has a strong tradition of producing weatherproof gear: so much so that they have clothed the last six European Solheim Cup teams.
They offer a range of trousers to suit all weather conditions. The Druids windvent trouser is designed for cold, windy, dry weather and it works admirably in this regard. They are made from a stretchable softshell fabric with a brushed inside. The fabric is water repellent but not waterproof.
They are certainly comfortable, quiet and they are extremely toasty. They have four roomy pockets and a two-button closure at the front. The only design feature I’d have liked to see is a gripper waistband.
You certainly won’t feel the cold in these trousers, and, although the fabric is badged as breathable, it’s possible to get too hot in less than Arctic conditions. And they aren’t really suitable to layer over with a waterproof due to the thickness of the garment. However, should I ever go on a golfing holiday to Scandinavia, then I’d be sure to pack these!
PROS
- Well constructed
- Comfortable
- Very warm
CONS
- Use limited to cold and dry conditions
Sizes: Waist 28-40 & Inside seam 30-34
Colour: Navy / Black
Callaway Winter Thermal Trousers
RRP £59
Comfortable, stylish, and most importantly, warm. The Callaway Golf Winter Thermal Trousers are perfect for playing 18 holes in tricky and tough conditions throughout the winter months. They are heavier than normal trousers due to the thickness to keep you warm, but thanks to Callaway’s Opti-Therm technology, that cosiness is incredibly comfortable.
The trousers do not feel heavy, and it does not feel like you have to lift weights as you walk. You can tell the difference between these and a normal pair of trousers, but the extra weight is not distracting or tiring. The trouser legs do not cling to your skin but hug your skin to provide comfort. Despite being tight fitting due to the thickness, movement is free and easy, with the fabric being able to stretch just enough for all the right golfing movements.
The pants have an active waistband, which can also stretch to fit, and the durable water repellent technology provides wind and water resistance. Four pockets also provide ample room for your phone, wallet, scorecard, tees, balls and more. These are incredible golf trousers for the winter months, and at less than £60, a must-buy.

- Water-resistant
- Comfortable

Ping SensorWarm Winter Trouser
RRP £100
I have never owned a pair of winter golf trousers before. I tend to wear my summer chinos with some thermal leggings under and suffer feeling a bit like the Michelin man climbing up and down the hills at my home club.
The Ping SenorWarm winter trousers are a revelation for me. They are thick, have brushed fabric insides that help keep you warm, they are water and wind-resistant, so they are brilliant in any conditions.
The pocket configuration is superb with a hidden button on one of the back pockets, and a gripper strip in the other to stop your scorecard holder slipping out as you walk around the course.
There’s also a zip pocket inside one of the front pockets, and combine that with a waistband gripper to stop your shirt from untucking. These really are the ultimate trousers.
PROS
- Very Warm
- Comfortable
- Great pockets
CONS
- Wouldn’t wear off course
Sizes: Waist 30-42 & Inseam 30-36
Colours: Fig/Stormcloud/Navy/Black
Glenmuir
Ashurst Trousers
RRP £80
These winter trousers from Glenmuir are designed to defy typical winter weather. They are constructed from 96% polyester, with the addition of 4% elastane, to allow freedom of movement. There’s a brushed inner fleece fabric which offers windproof, thermal and breathable properties. To cap it all, there’s a Teflon DWR finish, so the Ashurst offers protection against the wind, the cold and rain showers.
I’m typically a 32-inch waist and short inside leg. The 32/29 size fitted me quite closely, which worked ok for my slender shape, but more solid individuals might prefer to go up a size. That said, these trousers offer a tailored look which is not always the case in this category of apparel.
On the course, the Ashurst is certainly comfortable and snug. I have tested it in showery and blustery conditions, and it has kept me warm and dry. I appreciated the four large pockets with some added detail around the two rear pockets for added visual interest.
I’m sure you’ll never feel the cold in these impressive trousers, and they will also work well in showery conditions. They would not be my choice if persistent rain is forecast and you’re likely to require a waterproof layer. In this case a lighter trouser would be more appropriate.
These trousers come highly recommended, are sensibly priced and are easy to care for.
PROS
- Comfortable
- Deep pockets
- Warm
CONS
- Quite slim fitting
Sizes: Waist 32-42 & Inside seam 29-33
Colours: Navy / Black
Under Armour
Drive Jogger
RRP £70
The more casual look such as the use of hoodies or joggers is slowly taking over golf as players look for more comfort on and off the course.
Upon first impressions, the Under Armour Driver Joggers are extremely lightweight are very comfortable while offering the same practicality of your regular golf trousers, featuring a belt loop, two open hand and two back pockets.
Under Armour Storm technology on the exterior means repel water, or snow during the winter, yet don’t sacrifice breathability.
I love the design of the joggers, however, would find that the only downside to these, for me personally, is the elastic ankle tapering, but this is a personal preference.
These are a great pairing with the Under Armour Storm SweaterFleece Hoodie if you’re looking for the ultimate casual look or for those colder driving range or practice sessions throughout autumn and winter.
PROS
- Great Fit
- Comfortable
- Practical
CONS
- Not a fan of the elastic ankle tapering
Sizes: S-2XL
Colour: Black/Halo Grey
