First Impressions
I have to confess that I have never worn a golf boot before. Out of the box, these looked just like a pair of walking boots but with spikes. The look was functional rather than appealing, but you certainly get the impression that these boots can do what they’re meant to. There is a microfibre upper in contrasting textures, a removable cushioned insole and a generous amount of padding around the tongue and ankle.
This model is presented in just the black colour, as seen in the images, and I think that’s just fine considering the nature of the product. There are a couple of Stuburt logos, on the tongue and also the lateral aspect of the boot. There’s also some contrasting white detailing but, all in all, this is a very unfussy boot.
I must add that this boot felt pretty lightweight and was only slightly heavier than a couple of spiked golf shoes that we have reviewed in recent months.
The UK size 7.5 (Euro 41) standard width fitted my usually sized 7.5 wide foot comfortably enough out of the box. It’s my usual practice to wear new golf footwear around the house for a few hours before venturing out on the course. Initially I noticed there was quite a lot of rubbing around the ankle. However this soon settled after I spent a bit of time ensuring that I’d taken any slack out of the substantial lacing system. And I’d say that these boots fit true to size.
On Course Testing
Testing was carried out over two rounds in unusually wet conditions with standing water on my home heathland course. The first thing I’d say is that it does take a bit of time to put these boots on and lace them up securely so that they are fitting comfortably. If you are the type of golfer that screams into the car park two minutes before your tee time then you will either have to mend your ways or not take advantage of this sort of footwear.
The advantage of these is that you can march through puddles, thick wet rough and even shallow water hazards, sorry, penalty areas, with no concern that your feet will get wet. These boots remained completely weatherproof in testing conditions, thanks to Stuburt’s Dri-back waterproof technology.
They were also comfortable to wear and offered a secure grip from the seven spokes on each boot.
One might expect such a comfortable shoe to compromise on performance. This was absolutely not the case on testing. The Fusion-Lite TPU sole offered excellent feel and traction. The nine cleats and some additional nubbins afforded excellent grip, with no hint of slipping.
The shoe remained waterproof in the damp, but not wet conditions thanks to the waterproof and breathable membrane laminated to the lining of the shoe all the way up to the collar and tongue.
There were no issues with breathability which is not surprising, given the thought that has clearly gone into the construction of this shoe.
The 19th hole
The configuration of the outsole really means that this is a shoe that belongs on the course rather than the clubhouse. So this is not the shoe for the individual who prefers to put on their footwear at home.
Although I was not particularly fond of the look of the shoe, the comfort and performance were first class, and I think this would make an excellent winter shoe.
The leather upper will need looking after to maintain the appearance and behaviour of the shoe but I would expect that to be straightforward enough.
I think that the construction and performance of the shoe justifies the pricing and I fully expect that I will be wearing this shoe over the winter months.
