G Fore MG4+ golf shoes review: First Impressions
The MG4+ arrived in a substantial bright yellow box. On the inside of the lid, I was greeted with a provocative message, ‘No 1 cares what you shot’, which made me smile.
The shoe itself has an athletic & clean look which I really like. This model comes in eight different colour options, so there are plenty of choices. I tested a soft white (or ‘snow’) upper with a contrasting camo sole.
The upper isn’t leather and is described as premium synthetic, and it certainly has a premium look and feel. It also means this shoe has a fully waterproof exterior.
There is a contrasting grey moulded heel cup with an understated ‘Circle G’s’ logo on the outer aspect of the heel cup. The thick shoelaces add to the premium feel – there’s even a spare pair of laces in the bright yellow box.
A quick peek inside the shoe reveals numerous raised bumps on the removable density foam cushion footbed, which was something I hadn’t seen before.
The UK size 8 (Euro 42) fitted my usually sized 7.5 wide foot pretty well out of the box, although I felt there was too much space in the toe box. This, however, did not detract from the overall sense of comfort. The website advises you to size up if you’re in between sizes. My experience with this model is that they probably run true to size.
G Fore MG4+ golf shoes review: On The Course
Testing was carried out over two rounds in dry conditions on my home heathland course and a nearby links. Instantly I found the shoe was very comfortable straight out of the box.
The little nubs on the footbed felt rather unusual initially but I soon forgot they were there. The idea is that they offer a gentle massaging effect on the bottom of the foot and also promote airflow within the shoe. It’s a concept I have not experienced in other brands of the shoe and I think it’s a really good idea.
The shoe felt very stable thanks to the 3D moulded external heel cup. My feet really did feel locked into the shoe.
The two-piece non slip spikeless outsole comprises a mixture of traction patterns and offered excellent grip in the conditions tested which were, admittedly, dry. Based on the behaviour of the shoe, I am confident that it would continue to grip even in softer conditions.
Breathability appeared to be good , which is not always the case with synthetic upper construction. My feet remained fresh after each round of testing.
G Fore MG4+ golf shoes review: The 19th hole
The configuration of the outsole and the athletic look mean that this shoe works perfectly well in the clubhouse and could easily be worn to and from the golf course.
I really enjoyed the look, fit & feel of the shoe. An added bonus is that it is easy to maintain the look of the shoe with a simple wipe clean with a damp cloth. The camo pattern of the midsole disguises minor debris but is similarly easy to maintain.
At first glance, the price does seem a little steep for a non-leather shoe. However the looks, comfort and performance are really impressive and I think this is the best all-round shoe that I have tested so far this year.
